If you think cruises are all smooth sailing, let me introduce you to September in Scandinavia, aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line Prima-Class ship called Norwegian Prima, and two completely unplanned plot twists that turned a relaxing getaway into a story I now tell with laughter and mild disbelief.
This was a 7-night Northern Europe cruise, shared with a good friend, filled with misty fjords, cobblestone streets, spontaneous dancing, comedy shows, and a few heart-stopping moments that reminded me why travel is never boring.
If you’re dreaming of a cruise that blends elegance, adventure, culture, and unforgettable memories… keep reading.

Why September Is a Beautiful and Bold Time to Cruise Scandinavia
September in Northern Europe is a mood:
- cool air
- occasional drizzle
- fewer crowds
- dramatic landscapes
Yes, it was cold and wet at many ports, but that only made the fjords moodier, the cities cozier, and the coffee stops more satisfying. If you love atmosphere over heatwaves, September is a hidden gem.

Pre-Cruise Magic in Copenhagen
We arrived in Copenhagen the day before embarkation and stayed at a small hotel right in the city, one of my favourite decisions of the entire trip.
After breakfast on the embarkation morning, we wandered to a nearby local market, then settled into a quiet spot nearby to do one of my favourite travel activities: people-watching.
That’s when a group of schoolchildren walked past, all tall, all blond, and we just sat there, fascinated, grinning at how very Scandinavian the moment felt.
A few souvenir stops later, it was time for a taxi to the cruise port… and the real adventure began.

Welcome Aboard Norwegian Prima
We had booked a balcony stateroom, and from the moment we stepped inside, we were in love.
Modern design, thoughtful storage, and that private balcony that’s perfect for watching grey skies, dramatic coastlines, and early-morning arrivals into port.
Onboard life quickly settled into a rhythm:
- Dancing well into the night
- Laugh-out-loud comedy shows
- Easy elegance without stuffiness
Norwegian Prima strikes a beautiful balance between upscale and relaxed, which is exactly my travel style.

Oslo: A Rough Start, and a Lesson in Resilience
Our first major stop was Oslo, and unfortunately… this is where things took a turn.
I was robbed during our time ashore.
It was upsetting, disorienting, and absolutely not part of the plan. I had to quickly arrange for money to be transferred to me, which is no small task while travelling. My dear friend also split her cash in two parts and gave me half of it! What are friends for? Bless her.
I’ll be honest: it shook me.
But after allowing myself a moment to feel sad (and human), I regrouped. Travel tests you sometimes, and this was one of those moments.
Thankfully, the rest of the cruise helped restore my joy.

Kristiansand: Castles, Calm & Coastal Charm
Kristiansand was gentle, charming, and exactly what I needed.
Just a short walk from the port, we explored the historic Christiansholm Fortress, a coastal castle that once protected the city. Standing there, with the sea breeze cutting through our jackets, it felt like stepping into a quiet chapter of Norwegian history.
Kristiansand is peaceful, walkable, and ideal for travellers who enjoy relaxed exploration without rushing.

Bergen: Cobblestones, Markets & Cozy Moments
If I had to describe Bergen in one word, it would be "atmospheric."
We wandered through cobblestone streets near the harbour, explored the historic Bryggen area, and stopped at a lively market where we enjoyed a warm snack and a drink, simple, comforting, and perfect for the weather.
Bergen feels like a postcard that comes alive when it rains. The mist, the colours, the smell of the sea, it’s unforgettable. As we sailed off, we saw a double rainbow in the sky!!

Geiranger: Fjords That Leave You Speechless
Geiranger is the kind of place that makes everyone quiet.
Towering cliffs. Waterfalls cascading down sheer rock faces. Still water reflecting grey skies like glass.
We toured areas close to the port, soaking in views that don’t exist anywhere else. This is Norway at its most dramatic, and cruising is hands-down one of the best ways to experience it.

Ålesund: Military History with a View
In Ålesund, we visited a former military base opened to tourists, offering sweeping views over the city and surrounding islands.
Ålesund’s Art Nouveau architecture, rebuilt after a historic fire, gives it a distinct look, and from above, it’s absolutely stunning.
This stop blended history, scenery, and a bit of adventure beautifully.

Amsterdam: The Final and Wildest Chapter
We disembarked in Amsterdam, and I headed straight to the airport for my flight back to Canada.
And then… another drama.
At the check-in desk, I discovered I did not have my passport.
I had left it locked in the security locker in my stateroom.
Cue panic!!
I rushed out of the airport, grabbed a taxi, and negotiated a frantic round-trip dash back to the ship. I contacted Norwegian Prima, and a kind supervisor and the ship's security retrieved my passport and left it for me at the ship's entrance.
What followed was a full-on race against traffic, but I made it back to the airport just in time.
Exhausted. Relieved. Grateful.

Why This Cruise Still Gets My Highest Recommendation
- Despite the unexpected challenges, this cruise was:
- Beautiful
- Entertaining
- Comfortable
- Rich in culture and scenery
And honestly? The stories are half the magic.
If you want a cruise that goes beyond beaches, one that offers history, landscapes, vibrant cities, and unforgettable moments, a Scandinavian itinerary like this is an incredible choice.
